This position is a primary contributor to the safe and efficient operation of the Wichita, KS chemical facility. This position will support the plant engineering staff in process troubleshooting, production improvements and capital project development efforts to ensure budget rates, yields and product quality targets are met. This position will also lead specific plant product trials, capital projects, compliance requirements and provide technical guidance in root cause investigations.  
 

The Senior Plant Engineer will mentor and support the area plant engineers and will provide guidance on batch performance issues, BOM and yield tracking as well as quality non-conformances. The Senior Production Engineer will also manage the plant capex budget and support the area plant engineers in the development and execution of capital projects within budget. This position will routinely collaborate with production manager and the regional technical group on NPIs (new product introductions) and optimization opportunities. 
 

Daily interaction with the production manager, plant engineers, maintenance and distribution departments will be required. Strong interpersonal skills are required to lead cross-functional teams across the site. Must be able to work independently or with minimal supervision on multiple projects/initiatives across the site. The incumbent should have strong leadership competencies along with 10+ years of chemical manufacturing and process optimization experience. They should become proficient in the use of basic continuous improvement projects (TPM) supported by Evonik. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support and mentoring to area plant engineers for improving, OEE, yield and first-pass-prime quality improvement projects. Provide guidance in developing solutions for PHA action items, environmental and safety requirements as well as time schedules and cost estimates. 
  • Ensure successful completion of documentation for technical changes, Management of Change and Capital projects under their management, including EHS documentation. 
  • Support safety and environmental process activities and be a role model for leadership in these areas. 
  • Continuous improvement in productivity of the manufacturing facility. This includes mentoring and developing engineers and working with plant personnel to improve rates and yields through changes to process equipment, procedures, and operator training.  Perform failure and root cause analysis, bad actor analysis and make technical recommendations for repairs and/or replacements considering economics and plant availability risks 
  • Product quality including working with plant personnel to troubleshoot problems, investigate complaints, and implement effective technical solutions to prevent reoccurrence. Support the plant engineering staff effort in a technical based approach to understand catalyst balance and reduce losses 
  • Ensure compliance with all elements of process safety management including manufacturing procedures, participating in project and design hazard reviews, PHAs and MOC reviews. 
  • Mentor and develop Plant Engineers in capital project execution including justification, documentation, process design, equipment specification, operator training, start-up support, and troubleshooting. 
  • Provide leadership, technical expertise and support for new product introductions, major process changes using plant trial authorization, operator training and generating new manufacturing procedures. 
 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum BS ChE with at least 5+ years of experience in chemical manufacturing 
  • Extensive experience with reaction and distillation chemical processes 
  • Planning, leading, organizing, and negotiating 
  • Coaching, mentoring and developing of junior Production Engineers 
  • Leading and executing capital projects on time and within budget 
  • Utilities experience required 
  • Strong troubleshooting and technical problem-solving ability 
  • Ability to lead and direct project work teams 
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills 
  • Skilled in successfully overcoming technical challenges 
  • Skilled in identifying opportunities for optimization and implementing ideas 
  • Proficiency with data historians and trending software such as ASPEN
