This position ensures that all production units at the site receive all required Logistics services in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  This position places equal priorities on safety, quality, and protection of the environment.  This position is accountable for long term strategic planning and for meeting the site’s long term Logistics infrastructure goals.  This position is also responsible for implementing new technologies and for achieving continuous improvement and serves as an ambassador to the region and the global BU LO group on global projects and initiatives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct the planning and implementation of safe and reliable site logistical operations to meet the requirements of internal and external customers and vendors. This involves:
    • Managing systems that assure a continuous flow of materials and services to site BU’s. This includes barge, railcar, ISO container fleet, bulk carriers, truckload & LTL carriers, and express services.
    • Managing all railcar and truck movements for the site, scheduling receipt and dispatch from the production units and finalize with local freight companies (truck and rail).
    • Managing two onsite warehouses plus contract warehousing for excess inventory, maintaining records for regulatory purposes on “intermediate products, recycle products”, and leasing a third onsite warehouse to a business line
    • Managing a fleet of logistics equipment (locomotive, track movers, yard trucks, container lifts, scales, and forklifts)
    • Processing customer documentation for three business segments, multiple business lines, and four third party companies, liaison with freight forwarding companies and shipping agents, dealing directly with customer complaints on behalf of BU’s.
    • Developing and monitoring department KPIs and being responsible for the successful implementation and compliance with ISO standards
    • Negotiating and defining contracts for packaging materials, equipment, and services
  • Develop 3-5 year site Logistics infrastructure plans.  Develop and evaluate proposals for capital and other improvement projects; work with colleagues in Site Services and T&I to plan and execute these projects.   Serve as project responsible for all Logistics CAPEX projects.
  • Administer Safety, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Responsible Care, and Environmental Management systems and maintain accounts and records to ensure compliance with all regulations associated with a Logistics business.  Facilitate site regulatory compliance with department led DOT certification classes for all hazmat employees.  Consult on regulatory matters. 
  • Bring new technologies to facilitate the improvements in the performance of the department; work with the global BU-LO team to bring technical solutions from Asia and Europe to the NAFTA region as well as to bring NAFTA solutions to our global sites. 
  • Develop 3-5 year strategies to keep Logistics services at Mobile affordable and reliable.  The Logistics infrastructure must be right-sized and one step ahead of growth in order to ensure that the Mobile site is attractive to investments from Evonik and 3rd party companies. 
  • Lead the technical professionals, supervisors, operators, and clerical staff of the Logistics department, ensure that all personnel work together as a professional and effective team; provide all personnel with the right tools and training to perform their jobs; recruit the best staff for department openings, facilitate the development of personnel through department projects and training (such as conducting six sigma classes) and daily interactions; motivate personnel to strive for success through recognition of performance and results and the setting of achievable but challenging goals. 
  • Participate in NAFTA Supply Chain improvement teams and lead subgroups of multi-function personnel to find solutions for NAFTA wide problems / concerns and formulate 3-5 year supply chain strategies
 

REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires a broad based knowledge, experience and understanding of:
    • Applicable government regulations plus accepted business practices associated with contracting and shipping of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals.
    • Regulatory compliance for DOT (ground), FRA (rail), IATA (air), and IMDG (ocean) modes of transportation and GHS (Global Harmonization System). This includes labeling, marking and shipping documents.
    • The Logistics applications of SAP and their interfaces with standard operating procedures.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business, or Supply Chain/Logistics (Master's Degree preferred)
  • 10+ years of manufacturing, logistics, and/or supply chain experience (preferably in a chemical manufacturing environment) 
  • 3+ years of supervisory / management experience is required.  
  • Demonstrable expertise in continuous improvement is a must.
  • This position also requires effective interpersonal skills.  Communication is required at all levels within the Mobile site, Evonik Corporation, and BU LO, in addition to external enterprises.  
  • The ability to participate in and lead effective project and cross functional teams is required.  Building strategic partnerships is needed to effectively execute plans for improvement.    
  • Primary contacts for direction come from the Manager of Site Services, Segment Directors, plant superintendents, BU-LO leaders, and the Evonik company policies/standards.
