Strategically develop plans to provide improvements in the Safety performance of the site. Provide safety compliance support to the Mapleton site by designing, evaluating and updating site safety programs and meeting all documentation and reporting requirements for authority compliance, corporate policy and plant goals. Manage the ongoing monitoring for the safety program to ensure compliance and work with the different operational and maintenance groups to immediately respond to issues and ensure all groups have a firm understanding of requirements. Manage site safety projects including oversite of scope development, bid evaluation and supervision of field work. Support the ongoing Site Safety Initiatives by supporting the EHSS department as backup for the EHSS Manager and becoming a leader for site Safety Initiatives.



Program Management:

  • Manage the annual Hearing Conservation and Respirator/Emergency Response Team Medical Surveillance Program and develop/maintain a PAPR Program.
  • Provide oversight and implement continuous improvement for Lock-out/Tag-out Program, including training and procedure development.
  • Provide oversight for permitted work programs for hot work, confined space, and line/flange break.
  • Coordinate annual first aid/CPR/AED training for the site first responders.
  • Provide required training for Safety at Evonik and other safety programs.
  • Manage the safety incentive program, which includes reviewing and updating the program guidelines annually, overseeing the data collection process, and tracking employee points.
  • Coordinate with the Mapleton Emergency Response Team to ensure appropriate training and equipment is obtained to allow the team to support the plant.
  • Communicate with internal and external experts regarding compliance topics.
  • Prepare for, participate in, and assist with correcting findings from corporate and government audits/inspections.
  • Duties include Hazardous Waste Responsibility.

Provide leadership for safety/compliance related projects and safety initiatives toward continuous improvement:

  • Oversee the activities of associates involved in the safety inspection programs (safety shower/eye wash, emergency lights, AED inspections, first aid box maintenance, etc).
  • Conduct safety/housekeeping audits through the plant with the goal of continuous improvement.
  • Participate in support activities, including community outreach.
  • Provide support for the health and safety programs such as incident investigation, root cause analysis, industrial hygiene program.
  • Manage the site Joint Health & Safety Committee and coordinate response activities to address health and safety concerns identified through the committee.
  • Manage safety observation action items to ensure resolution.
  • Review process related work instructions and make recommendations/updates for continuous improvement. Assist production personnel with updating documentation for processes and procedures.
  • Coordinate and conduct quarterly drills for the site and follow up on identified opportunities for improvement (evacuation drill, first aid drill, Tornado drill, shelter in place drill, fire drill).
  • Process Safety: Provide support to the site PSM program, which includes participating in PHAs, taking a minor role in contractor management and performing contractor inspections, auditing permits, participating in incident investigations, and participating in JSA Reviews.

Training and Communication:

  • Provide training and evaluation for employees who will operate fork trucks, electric pallet jacks, manlifts, and Maxi-lift.
  • Coordinate with the Fire Chief to manage ERT Training (coordinate annual ERT Fire School Training).
  • Work with EHS Manager to develop monthly safety training.
  • Update and maintain the site training matrix.
  • Provide New Hire Orientation/training.
  • Maintain/update Contractor Safety Video.
  • Maintain/update New Employee Orientation Video.
  • Conduct LOTO training/review.
  • Conduct routine training on permit systems and procedures and update, as required.
  • Generate routine toolbox topics.
  • Develop, administer and continually improve safety management systems and practices by updating procedures, facilitating training, and working with operations.


  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a Safety related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5-10 years of experience in safety/production, preferably in a chemical manufacturing facility.
