This position is responsible for providing safety compliance oversight and services to Evonik Tippecanoe Laboratories and other Evonik facilities, upon request, to meet site responsibility for designing, scale-up, and operating safe chemical production processes. The position also participates in the development of safety concepts process safety studies for Evonik’s existing production processes and new investment projects to achieve safe, environmentally sound, and economically optimum chemical plants that are in compliance with applicable laws and codes. Additionally, this role is responsible for implementation of Evonik Global PSM Standards, Evonik Region standards, and OSHA and EPA PSM standards at Tippecanoe Laboratories. The role also serves as a mentor and technical guide for less experienced process engineers on fundamental safety practices.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Process Safety Management

  • Provide and implement technical assistance and process safety support to day-to-day manufacturing and projects to promote the design, construction, and operation of safe chemical production processes.
  • Provide and maintain technical assistance and support to Tippecanoe Laboratories to promote process safety throughout the plant lifecycle including startup, operation, modification, and decommissioning.
  • Find and recommend concepts for improving all process safety elements, including process hazard concepts for Tippecanoe Laboratories process technologies or production processes.
  • Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Facility Siting Analyses (FSA) for a group of diverse professionals at Tippecanoe Laboratories and other Evonik facilities (as needed) to obtain results through technical expertise and persuasion.
  • Perform process safety calculations (e.g. design of new emergency relief systems, gas dispersion models) using in-house and commercially available software.
  • Collaborate and support the development of process safety standards, practices and procedures with Evonik’s Global Process Safety Competence Center (GPSC) and Evonik Region PSM experts.
  • Exchange information and establish relationships with site, Segment, Business Line, and other Evonik sites (particularly those involved in the area of process safety) in order to promote process safety.
  • Support the enhancement of the competencies of the site engineers (e.g., process, plant) and chemists in all areas of process safety in order to support all site process technologies.
  • Maintain process safety knowledge by interfacing with external process safety organizations and obtaining appropriate training.

ESHS Integration

  • Engage peers and site customers in meeting compliance requirements and creating opportunities for streamlining compliance approaches
  • Develop and implement compliance tools to assist the site in understanding and maintaining compliance with program requirements
  • Perform program audits
  • Lead internal and governmental agency inspections for Process Safety
  • Keep abreast of changes to regulatory requirements and site applicability
  • Support ESHS event and change management as needed or as assigned, including evaluating ESHS program compliance data and events, taking follow-up action as appropriate and performing or providing guidance for investigations if needed
  • Develop supporting relationships with internal and external customers, including participation in various departmental, site, and/or regional ESHS-based teams and meetings, as needed
  • Prepare or contribute to preparation of ESHS compliance reports, ensuring data are correct and auditable; prepare ESHS data/program summaries as directed.
  • Contribute to establishing departmental goals and objectives aimed at improving ESHS performance
  • Contribute to actively managing ESHS spending

Responsible Care (RC) /ISO 14001 Management System

  • Support implementation and proper execution of ESHS Management System components
  • Support annual management system review
 

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Chemical Engineering or related engineering degree with 5+ years process safety experience or 5+ years' support in a high hazard environment. Masters' Degree is acceptable.
  • Detailed knowledge of process safety topics and their application, including but not limited to Process Hazard Analysis, Layer of Protection Analysis, Process Safety Management (including regulations), incident investigations, and other process safety related U.S. regulations.
  • Ability to make decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative.
  • Ability to identify and coordinate appropriate personnel (e.g., Plant Engineers, Process Engineers, Chemists) to achieve process safety results.
  • Ability to identify weak points in technical processes and in creating technical solutions and improvements to address these process safety deficiencies.
  • Strong demonstrated technical application, problem-solving, organization, project management, team leadership, computer application, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and documentation skills.
  • Understanding of chemical reaction hazards.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively across all levels of the organization. Excellent cooperation with site, Region, and global personnel is essential for the success of this position.
  • Ability to represent site during regulatory inspections.
  • Ability to develop and implement action plans with sustainable compliance results.
  • Ability to support a continuous operation (i.e. 24/7), including being on-call during off-shift hours, if needed.
