The position will provide expertise to support and improve process and maintenance reliability, primarily in the areas of instrumentation, electrical systems, and process controls.  This role assumes primary responsibility for plant process control systems including hands-on work with site E&I technicians and operators for troubleshooting and improvement.  The position will maintain the site’s strategic plan for the control, electrical and instrumentation systems.  This position includes working with the Silica PT leadership for capital planning and understanding corporate and business standards that must be applied to the site.  Employee is responsible for adhering to and practicing ESH, GMP, and Food safety procedures and controls implemented within the boundaries of their job function.  



  • Primary owner for (including development and maintenance of) plant process control system.  This includes related electrical and instrument drawings, procedures and other documentation.  Keep each up to date, manage change, and provide communication and training.
  • Maintain the mechanical integrity program for all I&E related devices and equipment.   Organize and maintain critical documentation library on plant equipment and processes for operation, maintenance, and legal requirements.  
  • Provide support to E&I technicians, process engineer(s), and other maintenance or production personnel for electrical, instrument and controls troubleshooting.  Perform failure and root cause analysis and make technical recommendations for repairs and replacements considering economics and plant availability risks.  Provide daily technical support for instrumentation and controls problems.  
  • Initiate, plan and implement long term projects to improve the process control reliability.  Provide plant specific technical expertise on the application of new process instrument and controls developments.
  • Plan and participate in the budgeting process for maintenance and capital projects.  Lead instrumentation, electrical and control aspects of small site projects  (< $2M) and participate in the same for larger projects run by resources outside the plant.  This includes preparing detailed scopes and cost estimates for these parts of the projects and defining execution strategy (such as internal vs external implementation resources).
  • Work with maintenance to set standards and training requirements for the E&I technician team.  Provide mentorship to the E&I technicians to improve overall maintenance performance and use of new technology.  
  • Identify and respond to opportunities to improve safety, environmental compliance, throughput, quality, costs, housekeeping, and employee commitment.  Assist in prioritization of improvement needs, develop and implement improvements.   
  • Actively participate in EH&S initiatives.  Serve as a leader for site EH&S culture.
  • Perform other duties as needed, such as leading or participating in six sigma projects, budgeting, HAZOPS, large capital project teams, etc. 


•    B.S Electrical Engineering or related technical background
•    7+ years chemical or process related plant experience
•    Hands on field experience with troubleshooting in a production environment
•    Experience with virtualized control system and thin client architecture including Factory Talk SE and VBA custom coding
•    Experience with Allen Bradley PLC technologies required.  Should be familiar with distributed PLC architecture design and maintenance.
•    Knowledge of various generations of hardware including Slick 500 and PLC 5 is a plus.
•    The ability to understand complex technical processes
•    Excellent communication, organization, management and leadership skills
•    Effective problem solving skills, implement solution to complex unanticipated issues impacting production.
•    Knowledge of various instrumentation equipment and maintenance practices
•    Function effectively in a multi-task environment, analyze situations and respond promptly.
