The Laboratory Technician has the primary responsibility for the sampling, testing, and monitoring the continuous process of manufacturing precipitated silica.  The testing, evaluation, and release of the finished product is also included in these responsibilities.



  • Perform all laboratory functions in a safe manner and actively support the safety program.
  • Sample and test the continuous production process.  Perform any adjustments as necessary to maintain product quality.
  • Conduct any additional testing to ensure changeovers in products prevents cross contamination.
  • Perform the finished product testing and release in a timely manner to facilitate shipping schedule.
  • Maintain notebooks and computer files in a neat and organized manner to facilitate data retrieval.
  • Maintain the lab equipment and calibrations as required to ensure accurate and consistent results.
  • Maintain an open dialog with Production Operators to ensure product quality and provide testing support as required.
  • Conduct required testing for Environmental and plant utilities to ensure compliance to permit requirements.
  • Assist in training of new laboratory technicians.
  • Participate in the quality improvement activities at the plant.
  • Conduct statistical evaluations and process controls as applicable.
  • Adhere to the procedures defined under the ISO-9000 certification.



  • A minimum of an Associate degree in a science related field.  A Bachelor of Science and study related to the field of chemistry in preferred.  
  • Basic computer skills in MS Excel, MS Access.  Experience with SAP would be a plus.  
  • Basic understanding of statistics also a plus. maintain the accurate and timely updating of the plant analytical data files.  
  • The incumbent needs sound judgment skills to evaluate the testing results and respond in an appropriate manner to ensure product quality.  
  • The incumbents actions and decisions have a direct impact on the product quality, production costs and supply chain reliability.  
  • This position requires sufficient independence to fulfill these activities with a minimum of supervision.
  • This position has the primary responsibility of monitoring product quality by conducting various testing and evaluating the results against the parameters established to maintain product within specification. This testing consists of physical testing and instrumental testing.  
  • The evaluation of the results requires specific knowledge regarding the chemical production process to determine the appropriate actions to be initiated when results warrant action.  
  • This position is responsible for maintenance & calibration of the laboratory equipment.  
  • This also includes maintaining the laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Included with the production support activities are additional testing for compliance of the wastewater system.  
  • This requires precise testing to monitor the effluent of the plant for environmental compliance.
