The position exists to support the research, development and transfer of new technology from lab scale to commercialization.  The incumbent will provide technical leadership in process development program definition, planning, execution and evaluation. The incumbent will be required to lead effectively on cross-functional project teams in a recognized technical expert role. The position contributes to the ongoing innovation and improvements in the associated business lines.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Leads the research, development and scale-up of complex new products in new and existing assets.   Orchestrates synthesis work and establishes key process parameters utilizing design of experiments, chemical analysis and data modeling techniques.  Responsible for the hands-on guidance of laboratory technicians with some direct supervisory responsibility.  Documents the knowledge gained from the research and development work in research reports.  Prepares a technical package of information for technology transfer.
  • Initiates new ideas and proposals involving innovative technology that results in lower manufacturing cost or increased capacity in Evonik Production Plants.  Works with stakeholders to gain support for new programs.
  • Applies existing know-how to troubleshoot and identify root causes.  Recognized across multiple sites as an expert in a particular tool, process or technology.
  • Participates with Engineering in process scope development in medium and large capital projects.
  • Performs proof of concept work on new technologies not currently practiced within a supported business line to expand the Evonik Innovation space. 
 

REQUIREMENTS

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience including working in a chemical laboratory research environment.  Experience in a manufacturing plant or pilot plant and project leadership experience desired
  • Experience with new product scale-up is required.   Direct experience in reaction engineering, organic synthesis, batch processing and separations highly desired.  Knowledge of catalysis, organometallics and dispersions is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead new technology development from the lab to commercial scale.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to effectively lead multi-disciplinary project teams 
  • Internally recognized technical expertise in a particular chemistry, process or skill
