The position is located in the Evonik Technology Centre (Allentown) and is focused on the organic synthesis and preliminary applications screening of new products in support of our epoxy technology.  The scope of this position encompasses new product development using amine curing agents for applications in coatings and composite materials.  The incumbent is required to apply their knowledge and experience to investigate product development via traditional synthetic methods as well as metal-catalyzed high/medium pressure reactions.  In addition, the candidate is required to conduct limited tests on the performance of different epoxy products in support of our business segments.  The support of the scale-up of new products prior to pilot-plant introduction may also be necessary.

 

The individual needs to demonstrate excellent organization skills in both planning and execution of project work, and should have excellent note taking, observation, trouble shooting and communication skills. 

 

This position also includes responsibility regarding safety within the laboratory. The incumbent will report to a senior technical chemist and is expected to work both as an individual and in a team environment with members of the Epoxy Curing Agents (ECA) team.
 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leads experimental lab work for new products development and application tests in projects assigned by RD&I (Research, Development and Innovation) Leads.

  • Works effectively in an unstructured environment – provides input to the planning process and then executes laboratory work in accordance with agreed to targets/milestones
  • Solves problems as appropriate in area of expertise
  • Applies and develops knowledge of test methodology in line with ASTM standards for coating/composites applications
  • Provides technical input to supervisor to propose changes for additional testing and experimental work to ensure projects are advanced
  • Ability to interpret test results and communicate key findings/conclusions  during new product development
  • Maintains accurate and thorough records of laboratory procedures and results; ensures compliance with Evonik standards, prepares technical reports on work conducted
  • Serves as a proactive role model and mentor within the technician community
  • Interacts with product/process R&D to exchange ideas, build up knowledge of process and transfer of information for scale- up
  • Uses and shares knowledge of specific laboratory techniques as it pertains to product synthesis.
  • Acts as an additional secondary contact with AT and process R&D team members for specific technical issues.


Demonstrates technical leadership in the area of safety

  • Demonstrates a high level of expertise in areas of safety and plays a lead role in group and departmental safety teams.
  • Provides technical input in the writing of laboratory safe work practices.
  • Functions as a departmental resource for areas of expertise in safety.
  • Executes laboratory work in accordance with Evonik safety protocols and looks for new ways to improve the efficiency and organization of the laboratory.
 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Related Science (Engineering/Polymer/Materials)
  • Minimum of 2 years industrial experience with a proven track record in the area of new products development, applications, and customer technical support 
  • Excellent communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Ability to work well in a cross functional team 
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Passion and desire for chemical technology and an ability to provide value added solutions to our customers.
